India Today has released the results of its annual survey of the best Indian colleges 2012. In the first part of a series, we bring you the top 10 engineering colleges, as per their findings.
One of the leading magazines in the country, India Today has prepared a list of the best colleges in India for this year.
The publication partnered with global marketing and advertising research company Nielsen to draw up a list of colleges using data from the Internet, various published reports and the Association of Indian Universities Handbook. Over 1,500 colleges were listed stream-wise.
Next, an expert panel comprising faculties and teachers from across the various institutions in each city completed a structured questionnaire where they had to judge each of these colleges and distribute 100 points across five parameters -- reputation of colleges, quality of academic input, student care, infrastructure and job prospects.
To ensure that there was no bias, all the aforesaid experts were forbidden from rating their own colleges. The perceptual scores for colleges were thus procured.
For the third round, a different panel of experts were asked to rate the above colleges in their respective streams, bearing the national perspective in mind.
To finalise the overall rankings, colleges that featured in the top 50 in the arts, science and commerce streams, the top 25 in the engineering, medicine and law streams and the top 10 in BBA, BCA, mass communication and journalism, fashion, fine arts, were asked to provide factual data. Those colleges that did not provide the factual data were not considered in the final ranking process.
After combining the perceptual scores and factual data, the final rankings were established.

10. IIT-Guwahati
In 10th place is Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati.
It was established in 1994 and currently has 11 departments and three inter-disciplinary academic centres covering engineering, science and humanities disciplines.
It caters to approximately 2,000 undergraduates and 1,000 postgraduates annually.
9. NIT-Tiruchirapalli
From failing to make the top 10 last year, the National Institute of Technology, Trichy has managed to nab ninth spot in 2012.
Established in 1964, NIT-Trichy was formerly known as the Regional Engineering College (REC) and counts over 2,000 undergraduates and 1,200 post-graduates as students.
8. NIT-Surathkal
In eighth place is the National Institute of Technology, Surathkal, Karnataka.
An autonomous university, NIT-Surathkal was founded in July 1960 as a joint venture between the Government of Karnataka and the Government of India, under the name the Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC).
Today, it has over 14 academic departments and offers undergraduate and post-graduate programmes in engineering, science and management to 3,000 undergraduate and 1800 post-graduate students.
7. IT-BHU
Moving up two places from last year is the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu Univerity, Varanasi.
Spread over 1,300 acres of campus, the institute came into existence in 1919 as a part of Banaras Hindu University.
In 1971, the Banaras Engineering College (BENCO), College of Mining & Metallurgy (MINMET) and College of Technology (TECHNO) were merged to form the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU).
It has 13 departments and three interdisciplinary schools.
6. IIT-Roorkee
Slipping down a notch from 2011 is the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee.
IIT Roorkee was established in 1847 AD as the first engineering college in India during the British regime.
The institute currently has 18 academic departments covering engineering, applied sciences, humanities and social sciences and management programmes, and caters to over 4,000 students annually.
5. BITS, Pilani
Rounding off the top five is the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani.
From its humble beginnings in the early 1900s as a small school under the name Birla Colleges of Arts, Commerce, Engineering, Pharmacy and Science, it soon became popular for its high standards and contribution in the field of higher education, particularly humanities and engineering.
In 1964, it was renamed the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani.
The institute consists of 15 academic departments focused on education in engineering and the sciences.
4. IIT-Chennai
In fourth position is the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.
Established in 1959, the residential institute is spread across 630 acres of campus land.
It has 16 academic departments offering programmes in science, engineering and research and caters to 2,900 undergraduates and 2,500 post-graduates.

3. IIT-Kharagpur
Third place goes to the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.
Among the first IITs established in 1951, it is known for its history, which saw it launched in a former jailhouse.
Today, IIT-Kharagpur boasts of the largest campus (2,100 acres) among all the IITs, besides having the most departments, and the highest student enrolment every year.
IIT Kharagpur has 19 academic departments, eight multi-disciplinary centres/schools, and 13 schools of excellence, in addition to laboratories and central research facilities. It sees over 4,500 undergraduates and 2,500 post-graduates annually.
2. IIT-Delhi
In second place we have the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.
It was established on August 21, 1961 as the College of Engineering and Technology, New Delhi. Two years later, it was upgraded to the Indian Institute of Technology.
Currently, the institute has 13 departments and 11 multi-disciplinary centres of research activity, which offer around 700 courses every semester, including undergraduate and post-graduate programmes.

1. IIT-Kanpur
Maintaining its top spot for the second consecutive year is the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur.
Located in Uttar Pradesh, it was established in 1959 and is one of the country's first IITs.
Although it started with 100 students and a limited faculty, today the institute caters to about 2,800 undergraduate and 2,500 post-graduate students.
They have nine engineering departments, which include industrial and management engineering, environmental engineering and management and nuclear engineering and technology, among others.
