By the time you complete reading this at least six people around the world have died from diabetes. According to one estimate high blood sugar causes about 4 million deaths each year, which is almost as many as those caused by AIDS.

According to the World Health Organisation 347 million people across the world have diabetes; it also projects that diabetes deaths will increase by two thirds between 2008 and 2030.

Another WHO observation points out that more than 80 per cent deaths caused by diabetes occur in small- and middle-income countries -- countries such as ours.

It isn't surprising that India is often called the diabetes capital of the world; by one estimate, 9 per cent of our population is diabetic.
