Day One of Lakme Fashion Week saw designer duo Shyamal and Bhumika showcase a collection inspired by ancient India -- saris, lehengas, sherwanis and kamarbandhs ruled the ramp. Rose, jet black, plush purple and chocolate brown were strikingly juxtaposed against each other.

Luxurious and opulent, here's a glimpse of the most striking emsembles.

We start off with this beautiful earthy sari, its ethnic pattern and burnished gold embellishment dominating its overall appeal.

Dramatic drape

A churidaar kurta shows off velvety edging and a mellow yellow tone, the drape of the dupatta creating a dramatic impression.

Sheer, sheen and shine

Brilliant orange falls in a becoming cut over transparent black churidaar pants, which add a hint of sensuality to conventional ethnicwear.

Courting couture

This handsome hunk looks straight out of a Mughal-era movie in a fitted sherwani jacket showing off rich brown, red and black.

Intricate musings

Another open-front ethnic outfit for men shows off an eye for detailed, intricate embroidery.

Fit for a princess

Model Marianna Dias looks every inch the princess in this ravishing ghagra choli, its contrasting dupatta only adding to its dashing qualities.

Royal regalia

A key accessory can always make or break an outfit. In this case it is once again the dotted, sequinned dupatta.

Princely pret

Sahil Shroff struts his stuff in this absolutely flooring sherwani, its ebony and gleaming gold creating magic on the runway.

Winning wine

Velour comes to the fore once more on this opulent ghagra, contrasting with gold choli and crepe wrap.

Final fantasy

And here is the last offering from Shyamal and Bhumika, where their preference for historic fashion once again shines through for the final turn on the ramp. Now you know where to go if you want to step out in style this wedding season!
