Outrageous 5: Superman in a thong?

Last updated on: September 21, 2009

Young and upoming fashion designer Kallol Datta insists he is not half as grim as his clothes. We let him prove it.

Kallol Datta's collections have often been associated with gothic and dark themes. The designer who shows on the last day of the Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai however insists that it's just the music and the use of black that give people the impression that he's a grim designer. So we decide to tickle his funny bone and quiz him on the five superheroes he'd like to dress up

Storm from X Men

She has an aura around her that simply floors me. I'd give her a straight-jacket inspired jumpsuit. I think it'll go well on her!

Cheetara from Thundercats

I'd gift her something by Falguni and Shane Peacock. Cheetara is half cheetah and half human. And Shane and Falguni do a lot of animal prints.

Pikachu from Pokemon

He's cute and cuddly. I think I'd like to see him in a baby dress... something that can be adjusted to fit as the baby grows up.

Superman

I'd give him a full-bodied neoprene suit -- the kinds that swimmers wear and would LOVE to see him in a sheer mesh thong.

Cringer from He-Man

Okay so he's not a superhero but He-Man's cowardly feline companion that turns into a furious battle cat once He-Man gets his superpowers. So for all his services to He-Man, I'd like to skin Paris Hilton and gift it to him.

'I don't plagiarise. But a lot of other people do'

Kallol Datta's take on fashion disasters, trends, wardrobe essentials and his defence of the colour black in his designs.

What are the most common fashion disasters amongst men and women?

There are many but nothing can get worse than the time you decide to subscribe to a trend blindly. I have seen so many people wearing the 'in thing' without so much considering if it would suit their body type.

What is your favourite trend?

Plagiarism!

Who do you plagiarise from?

I don't plagiarise. But a lot of other people do. I enjoy watching them!

What is the one thing that any fashion-conscious person must have in his/her wardrobe?

A good sense of humour! When you open a wardrobe, the clothes should speak with you. They have to have character and personality by themselves.

Alright then what are the three most essential things should one have in a wardrobe besides a good sense of humour?

Sinfully expensive accessories, good underwear and a nice raincoat -- not a Duckback one... a nice beautiful raincoat.

Why are almost all your collections so grim?

They are not. People perceive them to be so because I use black and the music I play during the show is dark.

Black is a grim colour...

You say this because you are conditioned to believe that black is a funeral colour and supposed to be grim. My collections are not grim or dark.
