Reader pics: Where India worships III

We invited readers to send in their favourite travel pic -- that one photograph that perfectly captures the beauty of a place they visited. In response, readers have sent in wonderful photographs from all across India. Here we feature some of photos readers sent in of India's many temples:

First up, Pankaj Kumar Sinha shares with us a picture of the Natraj Temple in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu.

Can a temple album ever be complete without a photograph of Kanyakumari? Lakshmanan P visited the place and shot this photograph.

Reader Ramesh Kulal writes this about the Vishnu temple in Ananthapura: "It has a simple, peaceful and divine atmosphere. There are no priests and crowd to bother you while enjoying the temple which is built on a lake. This was not in our itinerary. The local driver from Mangalore suggested it and we spent more than hour though it was delaying our check-in time at our next destination."

Srividya shares with us this picture she took at the Dakshineshwar Kaali temple in Kolkata. This temple, she says, was the first one she visited with her husband soon after their wedding.

If beaches and rave parties do not excite you in Goa visit the Shantadurga Temple in Phonda area of the state.

Amit Mhalas writes of this view, "I shot this photograph during the monsoon, which made not only the temple but the entire landscape beautiful. The temple has some very serene surroundings despite being so close to India's most popular tourist spots."

Jhansi -- better known for its legendary queen Laxmibai is 45 km away from the temples of Sonagiri.

Abhishek Jain tells us, "There are 77 temples on the hill. Idols in these temples belong to Jain gods and are over 1000 years old. This hill is used by many Jain saints to achieve nirvana or salvation.

The Sun Temple of Konark has fascinated many a generations of tourists. Saikat Nandy visited it recently and came back amazed at the genius of the architects that envisioned and built it.

Reader Srikath writes this of the Chennakeshava Temple in Belur, Karnataka: "This temple is famous for its intricate workmanship which includes elephants, lions, horses, episodes from the Indian mythological epics and sensuous dancers (Shilabalikas).

"It was a cloudy evening during August 2009 and the birds were coming home after a tired day when I shot this picture."

Atchi Reddy visited the temple of Lord Venkateswara on the sacred hill of Tirumala in Tirupathi and came back mesmerised.

Reader Kunal Bade visited the state of Uttarakhand and emailed us this picture of the Baijanath Temple near Kausani.

Anjana Sistla writes, "I recently visited Mahabalipuram which an hour and a half away from Chennai. It's a beautiful place with a rich history and amazing sights to see! This is a picture of the Shore Temple at Mahabalipuram."

And finally, Atish Prakash from Chandigarh shares his picture of the Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu.
