Summer getaways: Gulmarg and Ranikhet

We invited readers to share their summer getaway suggestions with us -- those idyllic spots where we love unwinding when the heat is on, scooting off for a few days of uninterrupted bliss. Here are two more responses we recieved:

First, Ameet Kakoti shares his getaway:

Getaway: Gulmarg

Description: A journey to the valley of peace.

Sights: Stay in Gulmarg itself -- they will be moments to cherish, with nature at its best prevailing all around. It truly gives immense joy to nature lovers. And yes, it's a great summer retreat.

Eats: At Heevans Resort

Shopping: Traditional Kasmiri shawls (pashmina) at national emporiums. But nothing for the boys -- they can look for good leather jackets!

How to get there: Daily flights from Delhi to Srinagar. From Srinagar, it's a 90 minute drive to Gulmarg.

Accommodation: Heevans Resort

Tariff: Rs 3,000 off-season

Getaway: Ranikhet

Description: A family vacation

Sights: The serene valley and snow-clad Himalayas. Enjoy the calm walks through the alpine woods. Also, the Jhoola Devi Mandir, Gurudwara , Mankameshwar Mandir and the famous golf course are all truly splendid.

Eats: Not too many options, but yes, on Mall Road you will find small joints serving typical Kumaoni food.

Shopping: Mall Road and the Kumaon Regiment shawl factory.

How to get there: Either to Delhi by air and then probably by car. Or by train upto Ramnagar and then just 90 kms by either car or a local state transport bus.

Accommodation: Fairhavens Ranikhet

Tariff: Approxinately Rs 15,000 for 3 nights/4 days
