Students from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and Shop For Change, which supports the cause of Indian cotton farmers, put on a fashion show in Mumbai last week to raise awareness.

Designs that utilise Shop for Change Fair Trade Cotton were displayed on the ramp in a set of five collections -- 'Morning Raaga', 'Madhubani', 'Ethereal Sands', 'Rustic Roots' and 'Precious Delight'. The idea behind using the certified breathable fabric is to secure the farmers' livelihood and and ensure that they are not exploited.

Designers Anita Dongre, Masaba Gupta (click here to read their style tips) and photographer Vikram Bawa presided as guest judges. Here's a glimpse of some chic styles in breathable fabric.

We start off with this white babydoll-ish kurta, worn over purple leggings, from the 'Morning Raga' line.

Crossover couture

This ensemble is quite a mix of Eastern and Western silhouettes. A trendy little kurta is worn over leggings once more, the overall effect of which is rather appealing.

Madhubani muse

From the second line, 'Madhubani', here is a rather cocktail-chic number, with a sleeveless bolero jacket to jazz things up.

Going birdy

A model shows off this rather summery white tunic dress, with a quaint print of birds down the back.

Ethereal sands

The colour scheme changes to earthier tones with the 'Ethereal Sands' line. Here we have a simple tunic with hieroglyphics creating a curious border.

Girly appeal

In contrast to the stark tailoring on the previous outfit, we have this softly feminine blouse from the 'Rustic Roots' collection, embellished with embroidery and a statement hair ornament.

Oriental overtures

A kimono-style front-fastening top is worn over a pair of fashionable lilac jodhpur pants.

Lounging around

Loose lounging casuals are the next big thing and this easy-fit blouse and dhoti pants from the 'Precious Delight' line fit right in.

Urban affair

Look like a socialite in this royal purple dress by setting it off with the matching handbag and sunglasses.

Final line-up

And here's a look at the final line-up of the young attire by young talent -- now you know that cotton's cool!
