The first-ever India International Jewellery Week kicked off in Mumbai on August 15. And besides the eye-searing gems on display, stars dazzled too -- check it out!
We didn't expect to see arch rivals Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif share the same ramp on the same day, but their presence on Day One of the India International Jewellery Week only serves to emphasise the scale of the event.
Over the course of the next few days, till August 19, the biggest and first show of its kind in Asia will see 30 major jewellery designers and brands display their work. Organised by the Gems & Jewellery Export Promotion Council of India, the IIJW is trying to promote Indian talent, with budding young entrants to the field being given a chance to forge a reputation.
Taking their lead from fashion weeks, the individual showings are nothing short of spectacular, especially when you consider the creativity and cost involved. And yes, they have glam showstoppers too!
What's more, even the clothing seen on the runway is a mix of works by both established fashion designers and newbies from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). Check it out!
The inaugural show was kicked off by jewellery giant Gitanjali Lifestyle, who put both traditional and Western-influenced, avante-garde pieces on display, like this stunning diamond-encrusted necklace and matching cuff.
For the traditionalists, this rich, royal beaded set of necklace and mang tikka in maroon and gold should be ideal.
Three distinct pieces -- a mang tikka once more, a choker and Rajasthan-influenced pearl and gem neckpiece -- go well together.
Model Jesse Randhawa strikes a pose in an assortment of funky wrist cuffs and chains, but the pearl earrings and tasselled necklace stand out.
Turquoise drops embellish this set, which clashes with the pink-tinged cocktail rings and arm accessories.
Looks like this twisty one-shouldered number was designed keeping in mind the similar pattern of the jewellery. And don't miss those chunky rings!
The second showing on Day Two was organised by Mirari & Co, who went for a distinctly opulent theme with this traditional bridal neckpiece, mang tikka and jhumka earrings.
Long gemstone dazzlers are teamed with a set of pearl strings in varying sizes for effect.
Diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but shimmering green emeralds with matching beads are sure to create a sparkle in your eyes too!
Mirari's next offering consists of varying jewels, from polki diamonds in the mang tikka to pearl drops around the neck.
Brilliant rubies sparkle from amidst rows of diamonds on this gorgeous floral piece.
For those who love crimson, this tasselled and beaded affair is sure to sit well -- and make a statement.
Actress Lillete Dubey takes her showstopping turn in a diamond and ruby set as daughter Ira looks on, in a necklace strung becomingly all the way to her shoulder.
Among the first on the catwalk for Laxmi Jewellers was Alesia Raut, who showed off a demure diamond set with a truly striking nose-ring.
If you prefer subtle jewellery to bling-thing pieces, this should do it for you.
We see an inverted hearts design on this one, for all those romantic-minded brides out there.
Geometrical designs can be tricky, but this lovely necklace with matching earrings seems to have got it right.
Laxmi Jewellers stick to their diamonds-only (read expensive!) theme with yet another glistening affair, teamed with a pretty peach sari.
Classy and understated, an all-white row-upon-row design stands out in sharp contrast against a blinding gold corset.
Intricate earrings and necklace show off little flowers and droplets.
A beautifully-set leaf-motif bracelet is the cynosure of all eyes, while a circular pendant hangs off rows of sparklers.
Whether you're blinded by Katrina Kaif's sensual beauty or those diamonds dripping off of her (don't miss that gigantic cuff!) we don't know, but we're certainly reaching for our glares!
The closing showing was by celebrity jewellery designer and the sister of actor Zayed Khan Farah Khan Ali, who departed from the conventional in a great way, like with this matte gold set.
Candice Pinto looks like a yesteryears' siren in these vintage-style pieces -- don't miss those huge gems on the earrings and necklace!
Pearl chain, diamond earrings and a polki cuff of eye-popping size attempt to mix it all up.
Binal Trivedi ups the ante with an even larger pale pink pearl set -- and a whopper of a ring!
And winding things down for the night we have Deepika Padukone, who showstopped for Farah looking very much like a bride in her strings of rubies, pearls and diamonds. What do you think, Siddharth Mallya?
