The top fashion buzzword of 2010: Lady Gaga!

The Global Language Monitor, a US-based company that tracks trends in language usage (particularly English), has just released its list of the top fashion buzzwords of the coming season.

On the official GLM website, it states that "the words were chosen from the global fashion media and nominated by key fashionistas from around the world. This exclusive ranking is based upon GLM's Predictive Quantities Index, a proprietary algorithm that tracks words and phrases in print and electronic media, on the Internet and throughout the blogosphere, now including social media. The words and phrases are tracked in relation to their frequency, contextual usage and appearance in global media outlets."

What's truly unique about this particular list is that it not only gives us a hint of fashion trends in 2010, but it's also the first time a name has taken first place among GLM's rankings. And that name is one none of us should have a hard time guessing at, especially after what she wore at the Grammys this weekend!

1. Lady Gaga

The 23-year-old star, known for creating shock waves with her outlandish costumes and bizarre stage antics, ranked at Number One on the style list for the spring.

Gaga's unusual sense of style, in fact, pipped Michelle Obama in the oh-so-fashionable list, with the US First Lady sitting pretty at Number Fifteen, reports the New York Daily News.

2. Leggins 2.0

According to GLM, leggings are a worldwide word craze and come in at Number Two on their list. It is further stated that they are now classified as 'jeggings' (denim jeans-style leggings), 'meggings' (male leggings) and so on.

3. No pants

Yup, hot pants got shorter and shorter till they disappeared altogether -- just ask Lady Gaga or Britney Spears, who are making it a habit of being seen in public in simply bodysuits! The GLM refers to them as 'hot pants for the 21st century'!

4. Off-shoulder

Looks like strapless styles are here to stay. The term 'off-shoulder', used frequently in association with garments that are without strap or one-shouldered denotes that it will be a big trend this coming spring.

5. Chandeliers

No, not the lighting -- the earrings! And Beyonce sure rocks them, doesn't she?

6. Boyfriend (clothing)

Ever heard of men's clothes for women? Comfy loose jeans, jackets etc. And ladies who like wearing their man's things are increasingly on the rise.

7. Peek-a-boo

Peepholes, cutouts, a cut here, a slit there -- peek-a-boo garments that offer a coy bit of skin are hot right now.

8. Camos

Military appeal and with it, camouflage, is back with a bang. So go the soldier way and make a style statement as you do.

9. Hippie-luxe

Yup, you read right. You may be wondering how hippie fashion with its retro appeal can look cutting-edge and 'haute', but the fashion world has pulled that look off successfully -- and you can too!

10. Armadillos

The credit for this term goes solely to designer Alexander McQueen and his controversial 'Armadillo' shoes -- they're made of python leather, shaped like lobsters and 12 inches high. So impossible to walk in that models refused to wear them on the runway!

11. Mixed prints

We've seen a lot of this trend even at Indian fashion weeks -- checks and stripes, florals and graphics. And it continues to gain momentum.

Embellishments

Frills and thrills, ruffles and lace, layers and pleated detailing -- embellishments are a big part of fashion at the moment.

13. Ethical fashion

Say no to furs and skins! PETA is sure to be happy at the inclusion of this buzzword and hope that it will prevail in entirety, even if that seems highly unlikely!

14. Fashion 2.0

It's the next step in technology -- using the web to broadcast live fashion from rampshows and other events to Internet fashion buyers and potential clients.

15. MOBama

And finally, the only other person to make it to the list -- US First Lady Michelle Obama, whose dress sense is a craze with women across the world. Why 'Mobama'? Because, according to GLM, she wears 'mom' jeans, but then she is a mother, wife, international personality and powerful dresser!
