Sabyasachi Mukherjee kick-started the Pearls Delhi Couture Week in the Capital last night.

The collection, titled Aparajito and inspired by the 'essence of India', according to the designer, was created using mainly khadi and was kicked off with the playing of the National Anthem.

Sabya's two favourite muses, Rani and Vidya Balan, accompanied him down the runway to launch the line. While the former opted for a chic strapless jumpsuit, Vidya chose an ethnic drape.

The traditional touch

Sabya then proceeded to serve up a host of traditional outfits, saying, "The whole collection has a museum-like quality, vintage and nostalgic. There was block printing from Rajasthan, kalamkari from Andhra Pradesh, khadi from Murshidabad..."

Muted palette

Toned-down greens and subtle browns made their presence felt on the ramp.

Dotted reverie

A see-through ghagra with light gold embellishments goes well with this dotted velour blouse.

Regal black

Swirling out gracefully, a black ethnic gown boasts of intricately embroidered sleeves and neckline.

Embroidered elegance

Binal Trivedi shows off an intricately embroidered kurti in rich hues of blue, gold and red, worn over a demure checkered skirt.

Royale regalia

Sabya proves once again why he is known as the 'Hermes of India' with this resplendent muted gold and red ensemble.

Pretty trinity

And here is a set of three, showing off contrasting fabrics and patterns, showing off varying amounts of glimmer against an intense background.
