Poll: The top Indian sports women!

Last updated on: March 6, 2010 12:56 IST

Women's Day is coming up on March 8 and we're marking the occasion with a series on India's women achievers across entertainment, business, sports, politics and fashion.

Today, we take a look at five young ladies who have made outstanding contributions to the field of sports. Vote for your favourite!

Saina Nehwal

She's one if the nation's best-performing sports figures and Saina Nehwal shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. She currently holds the Number 6 position in the world -- yes, world -- according to the Badminton World Federation. She is also the first Indian woman to have ever reached the singles quarterfinals at the Olympics back in 2008 and she was the first Indian to win the World Junior Badminton Championships the same year.

And here's the most astounding part -- Saina's not even 20 yet. Talk about single-minded dedication!

Dipika Pallikal

Here's another young lady who's been smashing her way to victory. Dipika is the first Indian squash player to have assumed the Number 0ne position in the under-15 category of the European and Asian Squash Rankings.

She's been playing since the age of 11 -- when she became a national champion -- and has been scooping up prestigious titles right from that tender age. Some of the more prominent ones are the German Open, the Dutch Open, the French Open, the Australian Open and the Scottish Open of the European Squash Federation's Junior Circuit. And hey, Dipika is only 18!

Tania Sachdev

Moving from the brawny to the brainy, we have 23-year-old Delhiite Sachdev.

This world-class chess player holds the titles of both International Master and Woman Grandmaster; in fact, she is only the eighth ever Indian Woman Grandmaster. Guess we should have seen it coming, though, what with her winning her first international title when she was only 8.

Tania travels the world taking part in prestigious chess tournaments. Here's wishing her as much success as her idol, Viswanathan Anand!

Sania Mirza

She may have been in the news more for her personal life than her tennis lately, what with her engagement breaking off, but Sania is arguably India's most popular Indian sports woman.

She burst onto the scene in 2003, when she turned pro at the age of 17 and since then, there's been no looking back. While she is currently seeded at Number 83 in the world, there was a time when she had climbed as high as Number 27.

While injuries have caused Sania to suffer setbacks in the last few years, don't forget she's the highest ranked female tennis player ever from India, with a host of prestigious titles under her belt, including her first-ever Grand Slam title at last year's Australian Open in the mixed doubles alongside partner Mahesh Bhupathi.

Joshna Chinappa

And rounding off the sports brigade, we have squash player Joshna Chinappa.

This 23-year-old from Chennai was the first Indian girl to win the British Squash Championship back in 2003 and is also India's youngest ever women's national champion. She started playing the game at the age of 7 and she's been claiming title after title ever since.

Joshna even bested fellow squash champ Dipika Pallikal at the semi-finals of the WISPA Challenger-2 event at the Indian Squash Academy in Chenna last October. She's certainly a force to reckon with!
