Designerspeak: Sizzling swimwear to match your body type!

Last updated on: September 23, 2010 18:49 IST

Designer Narresh Kukreja tells you which swimsuit will flatter your bod, depending upon your figure.

Men have it easy when it comes to fashion, especially when it comes to picking something out for the beach.

Women, on the other hand, are always plagued with the question of just which swimsuit will suit them best and spend hours deliberating over what to pick out when it comes to lazing by the sea or a pool on a relaxing day.

So we caught up with India's only exclusive swimwear designers Shrivan-Narresh (click here to catch a glimpse of their latest line) at the recently concluded Lakme Fashion Week and got Narresh to share some tips on choosing the right kind of swimsuit.

The following pages will tell you whether you need to invest in a bikini, tankini or maillot to look smashing in swimwear!

The apple

A tankini flatters the apple body type

The best part of a woman with an apple-type body is her shoulders. While such a person tends to bloat around the middle, the shoulders are the smallest and the most feminine part of her.

A tankini flatters such a figure as it covers the torso, ends a little below the bust and exposes the shoulders. Women with an apple type body should opt for darker coloured tankinis.

If they're going in for a multicoloured piece, they should ensure that the outermost portions of the colour palette are darker, so that the most curvy parts of their body are hidden.

The pear

Opt for a swimsuit with higher cuts

Women with a pear-type body are bottom-heavy.

It is a common misconception that if you have broad hips, they should be covered up. So you should go for a swimsuit with higher cuts, so the focus shifts to the legs rather than the butt. This also makes the body appear more proportionate than it actually is.

Boy shorts are a big no-no!

The hourglass

Bikinis look great on an hourglass bod

If you have an hourglass figure, everything is in proportion and you can carry off pretty much anything, including a two-piece.

Not a lot of women are blessed with this shape, but if you have it, there are no restrictions for you.

The H-frame

Diagonal cuts flatter an H-frame figure

This body type is athletic, but with wide waist and shoulders. Women with an H-frame should opt for swimwear that don't make their body look more block-shaped than it already is.

So even if you are wearing a single-piece swimsuit, you should go for a one-shoulder type or else something with a diagonal cut across the body, which will make you look feminine.

The V-frame

For the V-frame, an athletic two-strap swimsuit is best

Women with a V-frame body type have broad shoulders, which need to be covered. So ideally, they should wear an athletic two-strap swimsuit.

A tankini or a bikini usually puts focus on the shoulders, which aren't the best part of their bodies.

When you wear an athletic swimsuit, you tend to deviate the focus to the legs and the lower half of the body, which is proportionately smaller and more feminine.

Tankinis are a big no-no, because they tend to expose the shoulders.
