In an attempt to improve the intake of international students, the University of Cincinnati, United States of America recently announced new merit based scholarships which aims to take care of up to 40 per cent of the tuition costs.

For those who want that extra edge in their careers, they also have interesting short term programmes at the post graduate level.

In an online chat with readers on October 30, Charlie Schwartz, Assistant Director for International Admissions, University of Cincinnati addressed queries related to new programmes, merit scholarships available at the university and offered advice on how to write a good essay.

For those who missed the live chat, here's the unedited transcript:

CharlieSchwartz says, Hi Everyone! I'm so glad you could make our chat today. This is Charlie Schwartz, Assistant Director for International Admissions at UC. It looks like you've already started posting questions -- that's great! I'll do my best to answer any and all questions you have.

bearcats asked, Hi Charlie- any chance of bearcats bouncing back from last week's tough loss to the cardinals and win the Big east?

CharlieSchwartz answers, at 2012-10-30 16:02:03
Hi Bearcats! What a heartbreaker that game was! The Big East is tough this year, but if the football team can keep playing strong and stay near the top, I think we still have a chance in the Big East.
student asked, hi, pls tell me about the scholarships? do you have scholarships at undergraduate level? how can i apply?

CharlieSchwartz answers,
Absolutely! UC has two university-wide scholarships at the undergraduate level. The UC Global Scholarship ranges between $2,000 and $25,000 (full tuition) per year, and is renewable throughout your degree. No extra work is needed to apply -- your application to UC is also your application for scholarship. The UC International Outreach Scholarship is $12,000 per year, renewable, and is for students in select programs at UC. Again, nothing extra is needed for your application.
student asked, hi, pls tell me about the scholarships? do you have scholarships at undergraduate level? how can i apply?

CharlieSchwartz answers,
You can find more information on both scholarships at http://admissions.uc.edu/international/finance.html.
chinchina asked, hi there do u have any short term MBA programmes? i want to know the prospects of getting a job after an MBA in US?

CharlieSchwartz answers,
Hi Chinchina. The UC MBA is a one-year MBA (usually MBAs take two years in the USA). You can also add a program-specific MS degree -- such as Marketing or Accounting -- with another 9 months of study. So that's two degrees in less time than the traditional MBA work. There are plenty of opportunities for job placement after earning your MBA. UC has a fantastic Careers Services center on campus, with many fairs featuring great employers from Cincinnati and around the USA. We also have a dedicated staff in the Lindner College of Business who also work as career guidance. They are a wonderful team that will help you from your first day on campus to plan for your career after your degree.
Henna asked, Hi Charlie! Hope you are doing good. I am kinda unclear with the application procedure it would be nice if you can help me out.

CharlieSchwartz answers,
Hi Henna! The application procedure can be different depending on your level of study and program. Can you tell me what level you're going into and what you want to study?
Aditi asked, Even I would like to know about the job prospects after the course?

CharlieSchwartz answers,
Hi Aditi. Take a look at what I told chinchina. In addition, I think it's important to note that Cincinnati is a major city in the USA. We have a lot of major business headquartered here, including Proctor & Gamble and Fifth Third Bank. Because of all the great companies here, there are lots of opportunities to get work experience while studying here at UC. We have great opportunities for co-ops and internships because of the relationships we have with these companies.
student asked, which programmes are covered under the scholarships? when should i apply?

CharlieSchwartz answers,
The UC Global Scholarship is available for all programs. The UC International Outreach Scholarship is for many programs. There are too many to list here. You can find a complete list at http://admissions.uc.edu/international/finance/outreach.html
sagar asked, hi charlie i want to pursue PHd in management whats is the eligibility criteria for the same? i have done my PG dip frm massey uni auckland and my masters in IR and personnel management frm India...

CharlieSchwartz answers,
Hi Sagar -- Great to hear! It's a very competitive program that only takes a small number of students each year. You will need to give the GMAT and also the TOEFL (min. 100 on the TOEFL). We'll need transcripts from all of your higher education institutions, 2 Letters of Recommendation, a CV, Personal Statement, and also a resume of any relevant work experience.
Annamalai asked, Hi Sir please tell about scholarships for CS Graduate Engineering program, Work-Study options

CharlieSchwartz answers,
Hi Annamalai. It's a great program -- I have a friend finishing up his studies there right now. There are Cooperative Graduate Fellowships, which offers stipends and fees up to full employment pay for graduate study and research in engineering. You can also look into getting a Graduate Assistantship to help pay for school. There's also the University Graduate Scholarship that is awarded to graduate students as well. There are plenty of opportunities to help fund your degree!
jack asked, do I need work experience to get admission for a MBA program

CharlieSchwartz answers,
Hi Jack, While work experience is good to have, it is not required for the MBA admissions process.
Venu asked, Do u offer any Pharma courses

Hi Venu. Yep! We have a superb College of Pharmacy here at UC: http://pharmacy.uc.edu/. Anything in particular that you're looking to find out?

zaheer asked,
Hello Sir, do the University has any Agents/Representative in Hyderabad city, so that we can grab more details about programs, university and deadlines of the university.

CharlieSchwartz answers,
Hi Zaheer, We have multiple representatives in Hyderabad. Before choosing a partner to work with, you should really get in contact with our India Country Coordinator: Anjali Khavnekar. Anjali works full-time for UC out of Mumbai, and can be a huge help to you. You can reach her at anjali.khavnekar@uc.edu.
zaheer asked, Do student need IELTS/TOEFL for masters program?

CharlieSchwartz answers,
Zaheer, Most programs do require an IELTS/TOEFL score. What program are you looking to study?
aaa asked, What is the eligibility criteria for MBA programme?

CharlieSchwartz answers,
For the MBA, you need to submit the GMAT, TOEFL, transcripts, 2 letters of recommendation, a CV, and respond to essay questions.
TOEFL asked, how much should i score in toefl and gre to apply for the post graduate scholarships. i want to know about your masters programmes

CharlieSchwartz answers,
Scores can be different from program to program at the graduate level. What are you interested in studying?
seeker asked, Want to do Post Graduation either Embedded Systems or in Robotics ? Please tell me if u provide these courses......

CharlieSchwartz answers,
Hi Seeker. Yes! Both of these disciplines would be found in the MS Mechanical Engineering.
TOEFL asked, also please share some dos and donts while sending application. how to write a good essay? can you suggest some guidelines to follow?

CharlieSchwartz answers,
No problem. The first thing: definitely get all your application materials in to UC before the posted deadline. Late materials will not be taken, and it could cost you your seat at the university! Also, try to learn as much as you can about your program of study at UC: information about the department, the research being done, what the professors have written, and anything else you can find. This will help immensely when writing your essays and trying to find Graduate Assistantships.
sagar bolke asked, what are the entite Phd programme expenses at UC? whats the term for the course?

CharlieSchwartz answers,
Hi Sagar, The expenses for most graduate students are about $42,755. If you chose to study through the summer, too, that number becomes $55,603. That includes everything: tuition, fees, books, housing, meals -- everything.
Raghav asked, Hi Charlie, As I completed my B.Tech in 2005, I post more than seven years of work experience in testing depatement with one of the leading IT compnies in India. Can you please suggest GMAT score I would be required to see through the admissin in the university. Also please suggest the schlorship criteria. Thanks

CharlieSchwartz answers,
Hi Raghav, What program will you be going into? GMAT and scholarship competitiveness are based on individual graduate programs at UC.
arunkumar asked, i am commerece graduate with 10 years experiene can i do MBA with UC

CharlieSchwartz answers,
Absolutely! See the response I gave to "AAA" on the requirements. Is there anything more I can tell you about the program?
rpshrma asked, is it a public or private university? my daughter is BE computers from PuneIndia) university with first distinction record ,presently in Miami as project associate, total experience 5 years. Can her service experience be considered for earning at least 50 % scholarship.

CharlieSchwartz answers,
UC is a public university. Sounds like she has some great experience. Everything that's submitted as part of the application is taken into consideration for scholarship. So yes, we will consider her work experience when making decisions based on scholarship awards.
kk asked, For a person with good credentials ,are there opportunities to get a full fee waiver and monthly stipend for the MBA at UC?

CharlieSchwartz answers,
Yes. For some exceptional students, they are able to receive funding for the MBA program.
cchopade asked, Hi Charlie... I am interested in doing PhD in management. Does UC provide scholarships and financial assistance for PhD programs

CharlieSchwartz answers,
Great to hear! We do. You can find all of the funding opportunities at http://grad.uc.edu/admissions/Funding.html.
ananth asked, What is min GMAT score required for MBA

CharlieSchwartz answers,
I am not aware of a minimum GMAT for the MBA program. However, being an MBA grad from UC, I can tell you that in my personal experience, students scoring at least a 550 seem to have a high rate of admission to the program.
kk asked, The reason I asked about the full fee waiver and stipend option is I had that at Ohio state when I got my Master's in EE

CharlieSchwartz answers,
Great to hear! Engineering and Business can be a little different with how they fund students. I'd encourage you to contact the MBA program directly for specific information regarding your situation.
ccs asked, Hi,I would like to do MS at this age of 42 is it possible,if yes wht is the procedure to apply for ?

CharlieSchwartz answers,
Sure! We have students of all ages at UC. What program would you like to apply to?
arun asked, hi i am electrical engineer with 6 years work ex, will my work ex will be added advantage during admissions?
CharlieSchwartz answers, Hi Arun. Absolutely! Be sure to include any awards, honors, promotions, or anything else that might be relevant, as we look at all your submitted documents when reviewing applications.
seeker asked, Hi! again, I not able to find the exact link for "MS in Embedded Systems/Robotics". I searched under MS Mechanical Engg., But nothing related I found. Can you please give me exact link. P.S I am B.Tech in Information Technology, am I eligible for above courses?

CharlieSchwartz answers,
The best advice I can give you is to contact the program directly with SPECIFIC questions that you'd like to discuss. You can reach the program at: UCMechanicalEngineering@uc.edu.
Anupam asked, Are there not any medical undergraduate medical courses there? Because I have not heard anybody talking about them.

CharlieSchwartz answers,
Hi Anupam. Seems like it's been a lot of grad-level questions, right? We absolutely have medical-related undergraduate courses. The College of Allied Health Sciences and College of Nursing are two great examples. If you're looking to do Pre-Med work at UC, we have a pre-med program through the Pre-Professional Advising office as well. UC has 6 hospitals in the Cincinnati area, allowing you many opportunities to enter the medical field. Is there anything else you'd like to know?
cchopade asked, Hi Charlie... I am interested in doing PhD in management. Does UC provide scholarships and financial assistance for PhD programs

CharlieSchwartz answers,
Yes. All PhD programs in the Lindner College of Business are fully-funded positions.
jack asked, what is the general academic requirements (ie avg percentage) required for MIS

CharlieSchwartz answers,
MIS doesn't have avg percentage or published score requirements for the admission process. Application review is competitive based on the number of qualified applicants and the number of seats available in the program.
kk asked, Hi Charlie, thanks for your reply regarding my question.. "Yes. For some exceptional students, they are able to receive funding for the MBA program" I did want to ask you if this funding which you mentioned could be as high as a full fee waiver AND monthly stipend? Also I do have a Master's in EE from Ohio State and 6 years of work experience in the US after grad school ..Any chance this qualifies for a GMAT waiver like some business schools have these days?

CharlieSchwartz answers,
Thanks for the follow-up. Yes, it could be. However, business graduate funding is much different from engineering graduate funding. The main reason for this is because in engineering, much of the funding for graduate students comes from research grants and funding from outside the university. MBA programs generally are not research-intensive, meaning there are not as many opportunities for full funding. While there are some fully-funded students at the MBA level, there are VERY few. Sorry, you can't waive the GMAT -- especially if you're looking for full funding!
Nitpal asked, What exams i have to give for PHD

CharlieSchwartz answers,
(From my message to "sagar.") [PhD Management] is a very competitive program that only takes a small number of students each year. You will need to give the GMAT and also the TOEFL (min. 100 on the TOEFL). We'll need transcripts from all of your higher education institutions, 2 Letters of Recommendation, a CV, Personal Statement, and also a resume of any relevant work experience.
jigar asked, Hi Charlie! Does your University have a School of Dentistry, besides a School of Medicine?

CharlieSchwartz answers,
Hi Jigar, Sorry, we don't have a dentistry school here at UC.
Anupam asked, My question is how to enter into undergraduate medical course (equivale to MBBS here in India)in UC. I mean do we have to sit in USMLE exam or can there be direct admission.

CharlieSchwartz answers,
In the USA, there is not an undergraduate degree that you can receive in medicine equivalent to the MBBS. You would take coursework in either Biology or Chemistry (or any natural science) and also work to complete the Pre-Med track at the university. In completing your undergraduate degree, you then apply to graduate school, where you do 2 years of class, followed by 2 years of practical training.
kk asked, Hi Charlie, thanks again for the reply regarding the GMAT waiver ..The reason I asked is it seems that a lot of schools these days are starting to waive the GMAT for people who have advanced technical degrees from the US.It appears from your reply that UC doesnt follow that trend..yet

CharlieSchwartz answers,
Glad I could help!
aaa asked, What are the expenses for MBA programme?

CharlieSchwartz answers,
For one year of graduate school, the estimated expenses for all costs (tuition, housing, food, phone, health insurance, etc.) is $42,755.

CharlieSchwartz says, It looks like that's all the questions we have today. Thanks to everyone for participating in the chat. It was great (virtually) meeting all of you. I hope we can have the chance to connect on UC's campus soon! Have a great evening.
