8 reasons you'll love your internship

Law student Srishti Aishwarya Shrivastava lists out the not-to-obvious reasons why you should look forward to an internship.

We are the creatures obsessed with internship.

We intern in every freaking vacation we have, we intern even when we don't have a vacation, and the times when we are may be unfortunately not interning, we are applying for them and hopefully checking our mails every day, waiting for that goddamn confirmation.

We love it, we hate it, and we do it. After vacation when we come back, we are asked by parents and peers, "Oh, how was the internship", we always have our sagas to sing, good or bad.

Many of us write reviews and stories about our internship experience and read many of the same before going for one.

But do you know apart from the work/ people/ office, what interns really love in an internship?

The author is a student at NUJS, Kolkata and blogs on Law School Terrace and A First Taste of Law.

Dear Readers, do you have an interesting story to share about your summer internship?

Tell us what you enjoyed the most about the experience -- was it the plush office or the friends you made at work?

Did you have a Hitler boss or did you have a friendly senior? Most important of all, how did the experience add value to your career?

To share your internship story, write in to us at getahead@rediff.co.in (subject line: 'My Summer Internship Experience') and we'll publish the best entries right here. Your request for privacy shall be respected.

1. Coffee

Rather say, free coffee.

The Nescafe coffee vending machine makes every crappy work and every long night bearable.

It's lovely to choose between having a Latte, Espresso or Cappuccino.

Choosing the sort of coffee you want, and then sitting on your chair, sipping that hot coffee is just amazing.

2. Lunch breaks

The time when you can leave that goddamn chair and get a million dollar opportunity to breathe fresh air outside the office!

And even if you have to eat lunch in the office, just relish the food you are getting, and enjoy the time when you are legitimately not working.

The air of the fresh new green currency earned in lieu of your sweat and blood, makes all the toiling worthwhile.

It's your hard-earned money.

You can spend it on the dress you were eying or like an obedient kid, go and give the envelop to your parents and make them proud of you. Or just blow that money on a party, it's just all yours!

4. Networking

Internship gives you the million dollar option to know students from other schools and universities, who have lots of stories to share about their institute. And so do you have a lot of things to say.

They are the ones who are going to whine with you, and say cheers to the wine with you.

In fact, many even end up finding their better halves through such internships. Who knows cupid might strike you with his arrow in one of your internships!

Plus, you also get to know the people who work there. Watch out for the newly joined ones. They are too cool, they are going to be your pseudo friends, or may be a good friend, who knows.

Besides, they know all the work, including the one that you do and the one the company/ firm you are working in does.

Great help, great friend, you might find in them.

5. Free food

Most of the firms provide free dinner, if you stay after say 9 pm or 10 pm, and most of the interns, start planning what they would order an hour in advance.

Free food and good food -- never heard somebody saying no to it. It is officially, nay, not officially, yet the biggest perk of internship.

Free good food from expensive posh restaurants -- all the time when you stay till late, something that would happen all the time or at least more than a few times.

And yes, many places offer free lunch as well, or at least some subsidy on the food you buy from their canteen.

6. Travelling

Travel to Ladakh to intern or to Mumbai, enjoy the breath taking beauty of the former or shop till you drop in Colaba Causeway.

Internship gives you a chance to travel, and that too it's an all-expense paid trip, sponsored by your parents!

Plus, it comes with a lot of additional perks such as knowing a new language, culture, getting to taste different sorts of food.

I never knew that brinjal can be cooked with rice until I interned in Bangalore.

7. Free internet

This is one of the biggest boons, if you are not interning in your home town and the PG you are staying in is not wi-fi enabled.

Just a quick sneak peek into what people are up to on Facebook when you don't have work, is too good a break, enough to stretch your lips or show some teeth for a few seconds by seeing something funny on Facebook, or well, generally somewhere while browsing.

8. Free stationary

I knew a senior who loved to collect the notebooks and notepads of various firms and companies.

Not that I mind them, or anybody does.

First and foremost, free notepads and pens, never hurt.

Secondly, it's good to flaunt, notepads with the name of the esteemed elite firm written on it.

Plus, a law student's best mate, okay just mate, is pens, highlighters and notepads, so just cherish the one you have got for free. End of story!
