The Canon EOS 70D has occupied a fair bit of attention with its new Dual Pixel auto focus features, but that doesn’t mean the company has been slouching on its regular line of devices. Take for example the Canon EOS700D, which seeks to add a new EF-S 18-55 mm IS STM lens along with other upgrades to the winning formula that its devices have brought.

Is it a strong enough DSLR on its own or just a mere upgrade in the line-up? For that matter, is it a worthy investment when other devices like the EOS 70D are charting their own revolutions?

Design

If you’ve used a Canon EOS camera before, you’ll be in familiar territory. The build quality is extremely strong, with the camera weighing about 750 grams along with the normal lens. The body is made of steel and polycarbonate with a rubberised grip on the side which makes handling and holding the device that much easier during shots.

Navigating the various functions on the device is also easy.

Instead of using the D-Pad and Zoom buttons to properly find the right shot, you’ll be able to make use of the 3-inch touch-screen.

Simply pinch to zoom in and out of shots, and even change the settings for your picture in the same mode. You can even zoom into different images and then simply pan around to view different portions up close.

Canon took the liberty of improving the refresh rate for the screen, so you won’t be having any problems in terms of fluidity or stuttering. For those who want to rely on the old-fashioned method though, zoom buttons have been provided.

A D-Pad with buttons for auto focus and other functions has also been provided.

The Canon EOS 700D also has the benefit of a wireless flash trigger and a fully articulating screen which will help you take selfies that much more easily. In all honesty, they are just natural evolutions of DSLRs being able to make taking pictures easier. But one can’t deny their usefulness.

Interface

The EOS 700D features a variety of modes to shoot pictures in.

The mode dial categorises these into two places. The first is the basic category, which includes Scene Intelligent Auto for modes such as Creative Auto, Flash Off, Full Auto, Scene mode and many more.

These allow you to control functions such as ISO, flash, focus and even adjust the camera for capturing different tones such as Cool, Vivid, Soft, Warm, etc. You can also choose to shoot in HDR and at night.

The Creative category on the other hand allows you to customise ISO level, white balance, EV, metering, aperture and the exposure.

The camera will even go as far as handling the aperture and shutter speed in the Creative mode. There is a dedicated dial for switching between the Basic and Creative categories, along with a button dedicated to adjusting the ISO level.

One can also customise the shooting mode for Program AE, Shutter Priority AE and more.

Specs & image quality

The Nikon EOS 700D features an 18 megapixel CMOS sensor with an 18-55 mm lens with an aperture of f/3.5-5.6.

The IS STM lens is the real star here, as it works with the Hybrid AF technology that Canon has created, which allows for less noise during continuous autofocus, both during still capture and video recording.

Shutter speed varies from 1/4000 of a second to 30 seconds, while the ISO range is from 100-12800, with an additional setting at 25600. Burst mode allows for continuous shots up to 5 frames per second, and storage is handled with SD, SDHC and SDXC cards.

Video recording is at full HD, 30 frames per second, with Canon’s DIGIC 5 CPU handling the image processing. The Canon EOS 700D is capable of shooting both RAW and JPEG images. The battery life of the camera allows for up to 440 shots to be taken.

There are also ports for USB cables, HDMI and a microphone.

Image quality is very good, though details start washing out and noise levels begin increasing when one goes above the ISO 1600 range. Otherwise, colour quality and saturation is good with suitably sharp pictures.

Low light video recording could be better, especially at higher ISO settings with a balance needing to be maintained between noise levels and overall light. The continuous autofocus does make it far easier to take steady-hand videos though.

Verdict

If you already own an earlier model such as the EOS 650D or the EOS 600D, then the Canon EOS 700D marks a decent entry. Considering that it’s only slightly more expensive than its predecessors, it presents a more appealing case for those who are looking to make their first DSLR purchase than one who already has a significant number of devices.

Of course, if the autofocus isn’t much of a concern, it’s wholly possible to get a better device that costs significantly cheaper such as the Nikon D5200, which features a higher megapixel sensor. Altogether, however, the Canon EOS 700D presents a strong package and is certainly worth a look.

Price:

  • Canon EOS 700D body only: Rs 49,000
  • Canon EOS 700D with 18-55 lens: Rs 52,000
  • Canon EOS 700D with 18-135 lens: Rs 67,000
