The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities has come up with a unique global list of educational institutes based on their web presence, up-to-date information and the average digital traffic it receives. We bring you the list of top 20 Indian universities with the best websites.
The results of the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities were announced recently.
The global rankings of universities which have a strong digital presence is a unique educational initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group associated with the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC),a leading public research body in Spain.
Started in 2004, Webometrics currently offers country- and continent-specific listed rankings of about 12,000 universities and educational institutes in the world.
The list of institutes with the best and updated website is updated two times in a year -- in January and July respectively.
The Webometrics team rely heavily on each of the institute’s web presence, accuracy and updation of information, it’s unique visitors and its overall impact among other indicators to arrive at the final rankings.
In the following pages, we bring you the top 20 universities in India with a strong digital presence, as per their rankings.

20. Indian Statistical Institute Kolkata

In 20th place is the Indian Statistical Institute Kolkata.
Started in December 1931, the public university is one of the oldest institutions that imparts courses in statistics in the country.
19. University of Mumbai

Started in 1857, one of the oldest universities in the country ranks at Number 19 in the list.
It has several affiliated colleges offering undergraduate, post-graduate and research programmes in science, commerce, arts, engineering, management and law streams.
It has three campuses -- in Fort, Kalina and Ratnagiri in Maharashtra
18. Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati

Up next at Number 18, you have the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati.
Established in 1994, the technical institute with 11 departments and three inter-disciplinary academic centres offers programmes in engineering, science and humanities.
The residential campus is spread across 700 acres and is home to approximately 4,000 students who are pursuing their undergraduate or post graduate education.
17. All India Institute of Medical Sciences

The prestigious group of autonomous public medical colleges, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMSs) is ranked at Number 17.
Established in 1956, it is one of the most selective medical institutes, it admits only 0.1 per cent of its applied candidates into its courses.
It has constituent colleges in Delhi, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur and Rishikesh in India.
According to a recent announcement by the Medical Council of India, it can now admit about 600 students in the above colleges, after the MCI granted it an additional 300 seats for the forthcoming academic season.
16. Manipal University, Karnataka

Next on the list is Karnataka's deemed university.
Located in Manipal, Karnataka, Manipal University admits about 26,000 students from over 54 countries annually.
It has three campuses in India which includes two in Karnataka -- Bangalore and Mangalore and one in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
Outside of India, it has branches in Dubai, Malaysia and Antigua.
15. Jawaharlal Nehru University

In fifteenth place is Jawaharlal Nehru University.
The public university established in 1969 is named after the country’s first prime minister.
It has a 1000-acre campus and has ten special schools imparting courses in arts and aesthetics, computer and system sciences, international studies and languages to name a few.
It caters to over 7000 students annually.
14. Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee

One of the the first engineering colleges in India, the Indian Institute of Techonology Roorkee is ranked at Number 14.
Although it was established in 1847, the engineering institute became a public university in 1949.
It currently has 18 academic departments and offers programmes in engineering, applied sciences, humanities and social sciences and management.
The IIT-Roorkee caters to over 4,100 students annually.
13. Panjab University

In thirteenth place is Panjab University.
Established in 1882, it is one of the oldest universities in the country.
It has 65 educational departments offering courses at the undergraduate and post graduate level
12. Banaras Hindu University

The public central university comes in next at Number 12.
Started in 1916, it is spread over a 1300-acre campus.
Also known as one of the largest residential universities in the Asian continent, the BHU annually enrols over 20,000 students into its various programmes.
11. Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur

One of the first IITs to be established in the country, the IIT-Kharagpur is ranked at number 11 for its digital presence.
The technical institute was established in 1951 in a jailhouse and boasts of having one of the largest campuses among all the IITs -- 2100-acres.
It also has the most number of departments (19) and the highest student enrolment every year -- it enrols 7,000 students across its undergraduate and post-graduate programmes.
10. Anna University

Rounding off the Top Ten list of Indian universities with a strong web presence is Anna University.
Started in 1978, the university is named after the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu CN Annadurai.
With affiliation from hundreds of technical institutes in the state, the Anna University is the largest affiliating university for engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu.
9. National Institute of Technology Calicut

Next is the National Institute of Technology Calicut.
Started in 1961 as Calicut Regional Engineering College (CREC), it is located in Chathamangalam, a village in Kozhikode district of Kerala.
In 2002, it was renamed to its current name.
It caters to over 4000 students across its undergraduate and post graduate programmes.
8. International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad

In eighth place is the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad.
The autonomous university was started in 1998 and caters to over 1200 students at the undergraduate and post graduate level.
The institute is renowned for promoting research activities and programmes at the undergraduate level.
7. Indian Institute of Technology Delhi

The technical institute was established in August 1961 as the College of Engineering and Technology.
Two years later, it was upgraded to its current name, the Indian Institute of Technology.
It has 13 departments and 11 multi-disciplinary centres of research activity, which offer around 700 courses every semester, including undergraduate and post-graduate programmes.
Every year, it admits 4,600 students across the above programmes.
6. University of Delhi

In sixth place is the University of Delhi.
Started in 1922, the public university has 16 faculties managing 86 academic departments and is spread across 77 colleges and 5 other recognised institutes in the city.
It caters to over 1,32,000 students in the country which include undergraduates and post graduates.
5. Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur makes it to the Top Five.
When it started in 1959 as one of the first IITs in the country, it had 100 students and a limited faculty.
Today the institute caters to over 5,400 students across its undergraduate and post-graduate programmes.
They have eight engineering departments with specialisations in aerospace, biological sciences and bioengineering, chemical, civil, computer science and engineering, electrical, materials science and engineering and mechanical engineering.
4. Indian Institute of Science Bangalore

The Indian Institute of Science Bangalore is ranked fourth.
The deemed university was started in 1909 and is known for its research programmes in science and technology.
The campus is spread over 400 acres of land.
It has over 40 departments offering a wide range of research and engineering programmes.
3. Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research

Third on the list is the multidisciplinary research institute from Bangalore.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research was started in 1989.
It offers courses in chemistry and physics of materials, engineering mechanics, evolutionary and organismal biology, molecular biology and genetics, theoretical sciences, educational technology and geodynamics to name a few.
2. Indian Institute of Technology Madras

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras emerges runner up.
The residential institute, established in 1959 is spread across 620 acres of campus land.
It has 16 academic departments offering programmes in science, engineering and research and caters to 6,000 students annually.
1. Indian Institute of Technology Bombay

According to Webometrics, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has the best digital presence and its website attracts the most visitors in the country.
Founded in 1958, it was the first IIT to be set up with funds from the UNESCO.
The IIT-Bombay has 14 academic departments and offers undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
In the last five decades, over 39,000 students have graduated from this institute.
