Jab We Met: 'We shared a berth for 24 hours'

Last updated on: February 2, 2013 10:42 IST

We had invited you, our readers to share your love story this Valentine's Day.

This story was sent to us by a reader who remembered her love interest as 'the guy with sparkling eyes'. Illustration by Uttam Ghosh

After completing my BTech, I joined a one-year computer course in Kolkata.

In our class, there were only five girls and 75 boys. The other girls were all beautiful.

I being fat was shy and not so confident.

Even the boys did not show much interest in me. I also wanted to focus on studies and get a job in a good company.

There were so many boys in the class, that I could hardly remember everyone's name and face.

After few months, we were asked to go to Delhi to attend a job interview.

I thought of going but had no reservation to travel by train.

One of my old college mates who was also in my computer class asked me to join him.

He told me that there were some other boys from our class in the same coach, so they will adjust and give me one berth.

I got into the train.

Among the gang of boys, there was one tall, dark guy with small sparkling eyes.

He started talking to me and I was quite surprised that I had never noticed him in the class.

We reached Delhi and attended the job interview on the same day.

None of us were selected.

I wanted to come back to Kolkata immediately. My college friend was planning to stay back along with other boys for another two-three days.

The guy with small sparkling eyes came to me and told that he is also planning to go back immediately.

Both of us planned to take the very next train to Kolkata. We got into the train without reservation.

Fortunately again we met some of our class mates who had a reservation and offered us one berth.

Both of us shared that berth for the next 24 hrs.

We talked about childhood, college, friends, crushes, jobs etc etc.

After resuming back to class, we became good friends. I started liking him and all of a sudden developed a huge crush on him.

After completing the course, we started attending more job interviews. I wanted to get placed with him in the same company.

But destiny had other plans.

'I wrote him an e-mail sharing my feelings'

We both got good job offers but in different cities.

I had his phone number, so before leaving Kolkata, I called and spoke to him. After adjusting to the new city and job, I contacted him through e-mail.

He replied immediately. Then onwards our friendship continued through e-mail, chat, gradually moving to SMS and phone calls.

Everyday we use to chat for two to three hours. This continued for one to two years.

I felt as if he was the only emotional support for me in life.

Slowly I got strongly attached to him emotionally and one fine day I decided to tell him that I love him.

I was an introvert and it was really difficult for me to express myself, but somehow I thought of sharing my feelings with him.

I don't know from where I got the courage, but I wrote him an e-mail sharing my feelings. I waited for his reply and was terribly tensed.

My heart was beating fast. After waiting for few hours, finally I got an e-mail from him.

The reply was "No" from him. He wanted to be a friend and nothing more than that.

I was disheartened. I cried for several nights.

I didn't want to lose him as a friend, so we decided to continue as friends. But somehow things had changed.

I thought of ending my friendship with him as it was becoming difficult for me to continue.

I changed my job and ended all communication with him.

But in that young age, the feeling of rejection hurt me terribly and pulled down all my confidence.

After suffering for few years, slowly I decided to move on in life.

I succeeded in my career and got married to a nice person.
