To take on Bajaj Pulsar 180 and Hero Karizma R and to celebrate the release of X-Men -- Days of Future Past, TVS has launched Apache RTR 180 Matte Black Edition. But will it succeed?

While TVS hasn't updated the mechanicals of the Apache for quite some time now, the company continues to play with colours, says Faisal Ali Khan of MotorBeam.com

The TVS Apache is a very popular bike in India. After all, it's the only motorcycle which has challenged the Bajaj Pulsars in the 150-160cc and 180cc segments.

Unfortunately, even if TVS got the momentum in the performance segment with the launch of the Apache, the company did not follow it up by launching more powerful versions of the popular RTR bike.

To get the zing back TVS has come up with Apache RTR 180 Matte Black Edition.

The bike also gets body graphics on the front mudguard which is carried over to the rear, being used on the tank and below the rear grab rails.

The TVS Apache 180 Matte Black Edition gets no mechanical changes whatsoever. It continues to draw power from a 177.4cc, single-cylinder motor which belts out 17.3 BHP of peak power output at 8500 RPM and 15.5 Nm of peak torque output at 6500 RPM.

This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

The bike competes with the Bajaj Pulsar 180 in the segment while a distant rival is also the Hero Karizma R. TVS offers an option of ABS on the Apache 180.

TVS has been betting big on performance motorcycles. The company recently got into an alliance with Germany's BMW Motorrad and will come up with the first product next year, which is likely to be a 350cc Enduro motorcycle.

However, before that, TVS will launch a new Apache, which is most likely going to be a 250cc machine.

TVS says the upcoming Apache will draw inspiration from the Draken Concept, which was showcased at the 2014 Auto Expo earlier this year.
