Won by Vintage XI by 20 runs. Match Report The inaugural match of the "Series for the Gods" was played at MCG. The Vintage XI won the toss and elected to bat. They lost Hobbs quite early. In walked the colossus, Bradman. He was instructed to play a quieter innings than would have been expected. Bradman completed a 120-ball century before being lbw to Wasim Akram. Pollock gave him good support in a good stand of 94. Then Hammond and Walcott played better-than-run-ball innings and enabled Vintage XI to reach a very competitive score of 263 for 4. For the Moderns, only Garner commanded some respect. This would have been a walk-in-the-park for the outstanding Moderns line up. But the bowling was equally outstanding. They lost Tendulkar early. Greenidge played an anchor role. Richards and Lara could not force the pace and Lindwall struck telling blows at regular intervals. Bevan was out first ball and too much was left for Gilchrist, who tried manfully, and Hadlee. The Vintage XI won the match by 20 runs. The man of the match was Lindwall. An explanation here. The program redresses the imbalance between batsmen and bowlers in determining the man of the match. The quality of wickets taken comes into consideration. Hence Lindwall gets the nod ahead of Bradman.
