Estimation of Dalmiya assets yet to be made

Income Tax authorities are yet to make a final estimation of the valuables and documents seized from bank lockers as well as the office and residential premises of former ICC president Jagmohan Dalmiya during their search operation in the Calcutta last Thursday.

"We are yet to work out the final calculations and scrutinise documents obtained from the various premises ... but the seizures will be made public very soon," a senior IT official said Thursday.

He termed media reports about recovery of huge amount of cash and valuables from the lockers as '"mere speculation".

The scrutiny process is taking a wee bit longer due to the sudden death of Inspector Jaleswar Mandi, one of the over 100 sleuths involved in the operation, he said.

Mandi collapsed in one of Dalmiya's offices after complaining of chest pain during a search operation and later died in a city hospital of brain haemorrage. Senior officials are busy sorting out compensation and other formalities for the bereaved family, he added.

IT sleuths had conducted simultaneous search and survey operations at 28 premises of Dalmiya in Calcutta, three each in Delhi and Bombay, five in Bangalore and another in Jaipur following prima facie evidence that he had not paid taxes as per his income.

The officials had also sealed six bank lockers of the former ICC president.

Meanwhile, Director General (Investigations) of Income Tax S C Parija said Thursday details of seizures made during recent the raids will be announced in Parliament.

Parija did not reveal what had been found in the lockers but said "whatever seizure is made, it would be revealed in Parliament by the minister himself."
