Pay on performance proposal for Windies

West Indies cricketers may be paid according to how they perform in Tests and limited-overs internationals following weekend negotiations.

Both Clarvis Joseph, the first vice-president of the West Indies Cricket Board, and David Holford, chief executive of the West Indies Players Association, were on Monday tight-lipped about plans. The Barbados advocate, however, reported on Monday that the new pay scale is likely to be in effect from as early as the series against Zimbabwe, which starts in the Caribbean next week.

"The WICB is right now in negotiations with the Players' Association about the remuneration package and the nature of how that will be done," Joseph said.

"We have given them our proposed position on the manner and method of remuneration. They are in the first process of discussion, the details of which I do not feel it is appropriate at this time to disclose," said Holford, the former Barbados captain and West Indies allrounder.

"All I can say at this point in time is that the Board will be coming with some plan where the fees might be tied to performances."

West Indies players are paid according to the number of Tests and limited-overs internationals in which they have played, apart from other incentives.

It is believed, however, recent disappointing performances by the former world champions have led to the new pay structure proposed by the Board.
