Bombay strike back after first innings debacleRiz AhmedThe oft-decorated Bengal left arm spinner Utpal Chatterjee once again led from the front as the hosts had title-favourites Bombay on the mat, bowled out for a mere 182 on Monday, the opening day of their Group A Ranji Trophy Super League encounter at the Eden Gardens, Calcutta. The visitors however bounced back, grabbing two Bengal wickets, and at stumps, the hosts had 21 runs on the board with openers Nikhil Haldipur and Deep Dasgupta back in the pavilion. Nilesh Kulkarni and Rajesh Pawar, firing on all cylinders, did the damage to keep the hosts on tenterhooks. Chatterjee took four for 48, leaving Bombay skipper Amol Muzumdar ruing his decision to bat first after a 45-minute delayed start. However, the pitch came in for severe criticism with Bombay coach Ashok Mankad having lodged an official complaint with the match referee. Mankad, expressing his ire in no uncertain terms, said: "I’ve already lodged a complaint with the match referee and will speak to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president regarding this wicket. If this is the kind of strip on offer, I'm sorry to say that we are only ensuring the demise of domestic cricket." BANGALORE: Defending champion Karnataka's hopes of making it to the knocout stage of the Ranji Trophy received a severe jolt when the strong Delhi batting line-up put the host attack to the sword and posted an impressive 308 for five on Monday, the opening day of their Group `A' Super League tie at the Chinnaswamy stadium. Karnataka, missing the services of Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath and Sunil Joshi, need to beat Delhi outright to stay in the reckoning, but the first day's proceedings would have surely dampened their spirits a bit. Delhi opener Akash Chopra, making the most of a dropped catch, notched up a patient 101, and added 141 runs for the second wicket with Gautam Gambhir (73) to take the visitors to a position of strength. At draw of stumps, Mithun Minhas (batting 39) and Vijay Dahiya (batting 10) were at the crease. Karnataka skipper Venkatesh Prasad's decision asking Delhi to bat first, backfired as the wicket which has sprinkle of grass on it, gave little assistance to the bowlers. To add to Karnataka's woes, the bowling, save Prasad, was pedestrian with two dropped catches costing them dear. Scoreboard Delhi (1st innings): Akash Chopra c Thilak b Vadeyaraj 101, Ashu Dani b Prasad 19, Gautam Gambhir run out 73, Akash Malhotra c Thilak b Prasad 1, Virender Sehwag c Thilak b Vadeyaraj 49, Mithun Minhas batting 39, Vijay Dahiya batting 10. SECUNDERABAD: Hosts Hyderabad, needing to beat Baroda outright to stay in contention from Group B, saw their hopes vanish as the visitors took a crucial 12-run lead on Monday, the second day of their four-day Ranji Trophy Super League encounter at the Gymkhana ground. Baroda, who need just three points from the match to qualify for the knockout stage, virtually sealed their berth by posting 216 in reply to Hyderabad’s 204, thanks mainly to a superb half-century by Himanshu Jadav (84: 315m, 224b, 4x8) and his seventh wicket 65-run partnership with Ajit Bhoite (42) which helped them receover from a pecarious six own for 111. DELHI: Opener Ravneet Ricky missed out on a well-deserved century by three runs but helped Punjab post 246 for seven wickets against a fighting Railways on Monday, the opening day of their Group B Ranji Trophy Super League encounter. Ricky cracked a stroke-filled 97 (318m, 255b, 11x4, 1x6) and with fellow junior World Cup hero Yuvraj Singh (54) lifted the innings with a 90-run second wicket partnership after the early dismissal of skipper Vikram Rathoure. Ricky was also involved in two other crucial stands - 65 runs for the fourth wicket with Dinesh Mongia (34) and 52 runs for the sixth wicket with Harminder Jugnu (30). KANPUR: The visiting Tamil Nadu batsmen put the Uttar Pradesh attack to the sword as hosts tasted but just two successes on Monday, the opening day of their battle for the Ranji Trophy Super League Group C supremacy, at the Green Park. Riding on a brilliant unbeaten century by Sridharan Sriram (152 not out: 252b, 21x4) and his unconquered 193-run association for the third wicket with J. Madangopal (80 not out), Tamil Nadu were on a formidable 311 for two at draw of stumps. Despite the dissapointing early dismissal of Test star Sadagoppan Ramesh (6), the visitors showed their tone and determination in laying a solid base for a towering score in their first innings. Justifying skipper Sridharan Sharath’s decision to bat first, the Tamil Nadu batsmen -- Sriram, Hemang K. Badani (62) and Madangopal -- flayed the Uttar Pradesh attack as Tamil concluded the day’s play on a position of command. ORISSA: Visitors Haryana fought back taking three Orissa wickets for just 17 runs after being bowled out for a mere 206 on Monday, the opening day of their Group C Ranji Tropy Super League encounter at the Gopabandhu Stadium, Pradip. The day’s end position would have however seemed unimaginable when the Haryana opener Paramjit Singh (51: 121b, 6x4) and no.3 Parinder Sharma (40: 109b, 5x4) were at the crease. The duo got the visitors off to a flying start adding 93 runs for the second wicket after skipper Parinder won the toss and decided to bat. However a collapse followed with both Paramjit and Parinder being run-out, and Haryana were bowled out for 206 after losing their second wicket at 103. Orissa, having just eight overs to face before stumps, made a disastrous start losing skipper Shiv Sundar Das (4), Pradeep Das (6) and nightwatchman Debasish Mohanty (0) with only 17 runs on the board.
