Seles wins bronze
American Monica Seles (seeded 3) claimed the bronze medal in the women's singles palyoff, defeating Australian hopeful Jelena Dokic (6/1 6/4) thereby adding an Olympic medal to her career accolades which include 47 singles titles - among them
nine Grand Slam trophies.
"I'm just happy that I've won a medal," Seles said. "It was tough
conditions playing out there with the crowd, and Jelena played
unbelievably. I'm happy to come back Wednesday for the medal
ceremony. This is such an honour."
Seles attested to being in the right mindset to overpower the
Australian teenager.
"Mentally for sure I was the sharpest," the American said. "I knew
the crowd was into it and Jelena would be disappointed after her
match on Monday."
Dokic echoed her opponent's sentiments about letting the
match against Russian Elena Dementieva slip from her grasp.
"I didn't think I played that badly, I could have had a better set. But
I'm very disappointed about yesterday, that's the match I'm
disappointed about.
"I think I've lifted my game a little bit which I'm happy about. I'm
playing pretty well in all of my matches regardless of who's on the
other side. If I had one break chance, anything could have
happened."
But Tuesday belonged to Seles, who will be cheering for
compatriot Venus Williams as the US aims to add a golden
touch to her bronze.
