Humpy starts on winning note

Fresh from her recent victory in the First Saturday tournament, Woman Grandmaster and junior World champion Koneru Humpy continued her winning streak with a solid win in the opening game of the third Saturday GM chess tournament, being played in Belgrade, Yugoslavia.

The 14-year-old girl from Vijayawada won her match against Elo rated International Master Martinez Lopez of Spain.

Humpy (2484) played kings Indian attack with whites against Martinez (2474). She played an attacking game, sacrificing a pawn on move 16 and a knight on move 18 and built tremendous pressure on her rival black king.

Martinez ran into time pressure and blundered his bishop on 26th move and resigned on the 27th move.

Humpy gained one point from this victory.

The tournament is a Category-7 GM tournament, where average Elo rating of the tournament is 2415 with 11 rounds. Humpy should get 8.5 points to get her second gm norm.

Twelve players from four countries -- India, Spain, Bulgaria and Yugoslavia -- are participating.
