AltaVista plans Indian subsidiary

California-based AltaVista today announced its entry into the country with the launch of its India-specific search engine and said it would set up a subsidiary directly or through a joint venture in India by mid-2001.

"AltaVista will either launch its wholly owned subsidiary or enter into a joint venture keeping the majority stake to itself," Martin Keogh, international business development director of AltaVista, said during the launch of its Indian search engine.

Martin said the company is looking at a joint venture partnership with media, content, marketing, technology or Internet Service Provider companies in the country and added that the company was in the process of reviewing various entry options.

Elaborating on the new engine -- http://in.altavista.com -- Martin said the Web site, which contains 1.2 million India-specific web pages, would be the company's first country-specific site in Asia.

"In the first phase, AltaVista will establish its Indian engine in the Internet market in the country, but as the market develops we will be entering tie-ups with various content majors for localised content on the site," he said.

Recently, Yahoo launched its India operations with an Internet guide for Indians.
