UN outlines draft accord for Afghan govt

More than five days of hectic parleys between the four different Afghan groups in Bonn, Germany, finally bore some results, as the United Nations on Sunday outlined a draft agreement for an interim government in Kabul.

The four groups had submitted to the world body a draft accord, which provided for a 20 to 30 member interim government to rule the country for six months.

The agreement also provided for a supreme court and a 21-member commission to organise the convening of a Loya Jirga, the grand assembly of tribal elders, UN spokesman Ahmad Fawzi said

A symbolic role had also been envisioned for former king Mohammed Zahir Shah in the interim period, possibly in convening and presiding over the Loya Jirga.

However, the groups were still divided over the nominees for the new government.

"When it comes down to names, it gets very difficult," he said. "It is important that we discuss and finalise a list of names in Bonn."
