Taliban cracking up, some dissidents flee to Pakistan: Report

In a significant development, some senior Taliban officials have defected from the militia and fled to Pakistan hoping to negotiate a place for themselves in the new dispensation being put in place in Afghanistan, London's The Times daily reported on Tuesday.

The defectors want the Taliban's supreme leader Mullah Muhammad Omar to end the confrontation with the United States, the paper said.

The defectors have reached Pakistan's North West Frontier Province and are holding talks with local Pushtoon leaders.

The three most important dissidents are Mullah Abdul Kadir, the former governor of Nangarhar province and- considered to be the number 3 in the Taliban hierarchy, former education minister Mullah Amir Khan Muttaqi and former deputy foreign minister Abdul Rehman Zahid.
