Fakir Chand in Bangalore
A bakery group in Bangalore has hit upon a novel way to pay homage to the victims of the World Trade Centre.
Nilgiris has built a replica of the twin towers using candy saying that its exhibition of baking skills would send a 'message of peace and love to the citizens of the world'.
Though, obviously, not of the same height as the towering WTC, the cake version of the twin towers measures 24 feet in height, around 2.5 sq ft in width and 30 inches in thickness.
But, the design is an exact replica of the original structure, which had 110 stories each.
"We have used about 800kg of sugar, 80kg of edible gelatin fluid, and a kg of preservatives to build this replica, involving 500 man hours, with 50 people working day and night over the last fortnight," Nilgiris' managing director C Ramachandran told rediff.com in Bangalore on Friday.
He said the replica had cost Nilgiris over Rs 100,000 in materials alone.
Claiming to the first of kind in the country or perhaps the world over, Ramchandran said the replica would be on display at the 10-day cake exhibition to be organised during the Christmas and New Year festive holidays.
"Though the horrendous incident was not only most unfortunate, but also tragic as it claimed thousands of innocent lives, the WTC towers symbolised courage and hope in a strife-torn world. We want to bring back the same kind of inspiration with its replica," Ramachandran said.
The Rs one billion Nilgiris group with as many as 20 supermarket stores in major cities of south India has been holding its now famous cake exhibition for the last 30 years.
As pioneers of bakery and confectionery in south India since 1905, Nilgiris has been making true-to-life sugar and chocolate models of world famous buildings such as Eiffel Towers, the United Nations' building, Statue of Liberty, St Mary's Basilica, Titanic, Mysore Palace and Vidhan Soudha of Bangalore.
