Amidst conflicting reports of Taleban withdrawal from their stronghold of Kandahar, former Afghanistan President Burhanuddin Rabbani arrived on Saturday in Kabul, four days after it was captured by opposition forces.
Rabbani arrived in the city in a jeep in a convoy of 15 vehicles accompanied by heavily armed guards. Representatives of other factions which make up the Northern Alliance were with him in the convoy.
"We will try to form a broad-based government as soon as possible, it depends on the seriousness of the Afghan people and the UN," he told a press conference a few hours later.
Rabbani was forced out of Kabul by the Taleban in 1996 but has remained the UN-recognised head of state.
