Taleban commanders in Kunduz have formally approached the United Nations with an offer of surrender.
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan is in touch with the International Committee of Red Cross in this connection. His representative has urged the Northern Alliance to respect international conventions.
Officials at the UN said the world body was approached in Islamabad on Tuesday.
According to analysts, the UN would find it difficult to accept the Taleban fighters as the world body has no presence on the ground.
