UN orders global freeze on assets of entire Taleban govt

In what is seen as the final nail in the coffin of the Taleban, the United Nations on Tuesday night ordered a global freeze on the assets held by every member of the former Taleban government.

The freeze also covers the accounts of Afghan-related businesses, including one held at Citibank in New Delhi, an agency report said.

The list names 152 Taleban officials, beginning with Taleban founder Mullah Mohammed Omar, and ending with senior officials in government ministries from the education department to zoning.

The list, which incorporates many of the names made public by Bush administration as part of its anti-terrorism campaign, was adopted on Tuesday by the Security Council committee enforcing binding UN resolutions requiring all nations to comply with the freeze order.

A Saudi charity appears on the new Security Council list as well as the entire Al Barakaat financial network, a Somali-based money-transferring network with operations in North America.

The Bush administration has been trying to get countries to respond to the lists it has made public so far.
