The US and its allies launched another air attack over Kandahar in southern Afghanistan on Monday. Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, and Jalalabad are also being bombed by US fighters.
Reports said the airport in Jalalabad was hit for the second day in running by the US forces.
Kandahar, which is home to the ruling Taleban regime's chief, Mullah Omar, is the operational headquarters for Afghanistan's armed forces.
The attacks came 24 hours after the opening of the conventional military campaign aimed at military targets and Osama bin Laden's terrorist training camps.
In Kabul, anti-aircraft fire was heard signalling a second night of attacks by the US and British coalition.
Power was cut throughout the city as the rattle of anti-aircraft fire began about 8.40 pm local time.
It also appeared the Taleban were firing surface-to-surface missiles, presumably towards opposition Northern Alliance forces about 20 km north of Kabul. About 20 minutes after the anti-aircraft fire began, two loud explosions could be heard north of Kabul in the area near the airport.
Reports said the Northern Alliance, which controls a large area north of Kabul, is firing rockets in coordination with the US forces.
At a Pentagon press briefing, General Richard Myers, said 10 fighter aircraft are involved in Monday's attacks. Tomhawk cruise missiles are also being used, he added.
