Striking a note of angry defiance, Al-Qaeda's spokesman Suleiman Abu Gheit, in a televised statement on Tuesday night on Qatar's Al-Jazeera television channel, warned that America had "opened a door that would never close" by attacking Afghanistan.
The spokesman said hundreds of Muslims were as eager to embrace death in the cause of Islam as Americans were in their pursuit of life.
Praising the young men who had smashed New York's World Trade Centre to ruins and even attacked the Pentagon, symbol of America's military might, he said they had taken the battle to the American heartland and the war would not leave America as long as America did not leave Arab and Islamic lands.
The spokesman said the 'crusade' promised by President George W Bush, Jr, had begun and called upon all Muslims to fight and drive the non-believers out of their lands.
