India firmly opposes equating terrorists with freedom fighters

India has firmly opposed any attempt to equate terrorists attempting to overthrow representative governments and deny people human rights with freedom fighters saying it is an affront to those who genuinely fought for freedom.

"Both their (terrorists) objectives and the means they use besmirch the memory of those who truly fought for freedom," India's representative at the United Nations Y K Sinha said on Monday.

Addressing the Special Political and Decolonisation Committee, Sinha said, "Terrorists are not freedom fighters. Terrorism is defined by the act, not by a spurious and self-serving description of the perpetrators."

Sinha said the UN has accepted the principle that any attempt at partial or total disruption of national unity or the territorial integrity of a country is incompatible with the purpose of the world body.

But terrorists continue to violate this principle using 'increasingly vile and violent' methods, he said.
