Life in the Kashmir valley was crippled on Friday in view of a general strike called by some fundamentalist parties to protest against the United States-led attack on Afghanistan.
The strike coincided with a similar call given by like-minded parties in Pakistan.
All shops and business establishments were closed and very few vehicles ventured on the roads.
Government offices and educational institutions too were closed in view of the strike.
Police said groups of young men shouting religious and anti-US slogans came out on the streets in Srinagar's downtown area and forced shops to down shutters.
In the old city, they had to use tear gas and batons to disperse stone throwing youths.
Authorities have mounted security in the city and deployed police and paramilitary forces in sensitive areas.
