Ajit Jain in Toronto
Liberal Member of Parliament Jim Karygiannis came down very hard on Canadians who have resorted to violence, name calling, etc against South Asians and Muslims following the tragedy of September 11.
He was called to the podium before the start of Bhagavat Gita, a solo Bharatanatyam dance recital by internationally acclaimed artist Dr Padma Subramaniam, on October 14 at the Toronto Centre for Arts.
"In Toronto, 57 percent of the people are those who arrived in the last 50 years and they are distinctive national minorities who celebrate each other," he said.
"Walking from one street to another a person can have a Chinese dinner and then top it off with a Greek coffee, or have Hindu food at the Bombay Palace and then have a Turkish coffee up the street," he said.
"We must respect each other and ensure that we live shoulder to shoulder," he added.
Karygiannis has been a friend of the South Asian community for many years. His constituency of Scarborough Agincourt, East of Toronto, has large concentration of ethnic voters.
