As US fighter jets launched a fresh assault on Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, on Wednesday morning, three loud explosions were heard on the ground.
Residents said the explosions were louder, suggesting targets closer to the city. The pre-dawn attacks may have targeted the hills surrounding the capital, sources said.
The attacks began at 0430 IST and the Taleban forces responded by firing anti-aircraft guns.
The opposition Northern Alliance said the US jets targeted Taleban's frontline positions north of Kabul for the first time.
A Northern Alliance commander said US bombs targeted Taleban forces positioned at Shohi in Nijrab district of Kapisa province as well as positions close to the Bagram airbase.
Two US AC-130 ground attack planes were deployed once again on Wednesday.
The deployment of these low-flying planes is being seen as a sign of the US military's confidence that Taleban militia's air defences no longer pose a serious threat.
