Israeli-Palestinian tensions rose to a new level with twenty Israeli tanks entering 3 km into the autonomous Palestinian town of Bethlehem in the West Bank, witnesses said on Friday.
There were reports of gunfire from the neighbouring Palestinian areas of Beit Jala and Beit Sahour.
The Israeli military operation followed an helicopter raid on Bethlehem on Thursday during which three members of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement were killed.
