Uzbek warlord General Abdul Rashid Dostum, a leading member of the alliance fighting the Taleban regime in Afghanistan, has reportedly dispelled rumours of his death in a telephone interview accorded to Turkish television on Saturday.
Qatar-based Arabic-language satellite television news channel Al-Jazeera had reported earlier that Dostum had died a few days ago.
The television's correspondent in Kabul, Taysir Alluni, said a Taleban military commander had confirmed the report.
Dostam reportedly spoke by satellite telephone to the CNN-Turk channel and said the rumours had been spread by the Taleban.
"Things are going well for us at the front, whereas the Taleban are trying to demoralise our troops," he was reported to have said.
The military commander was reported to be speaking from his base, which is two kilometres away from the town of Mazar-e-Sharif.
