US acknowledges presence of ground troops in Afghanistan

United States Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld on Tuesday acknowledged that a small number of US ground troops were inside Afghanistan, directing air strikes against the ruling Taleban militia's forces and helping with supplies and communications.

Rumsfeld said the number of US military personnel on the ground was 'very modest' and were helping opposition forces with logistics, communications, targets and, on the other hand, inputs for the air raids by US aircraft.

He said that their presence in Afghanistan had improved the efficiency of the air attacks.

Rumsfeld said the troops were in the northern part of the country, in territory held by the opposition Northern Alliance.

It was the most explicit acknowledgement yet by any senior Bush administration official about the presence of US troops in Afghanistan on a full-time basis.
