Thousands have been feared killed in the terrorist attacks on Tuesday on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington.
However, officials are not willing to hazard a guess on the casualties and it may be days before the final figure emerges.
Terrorists crashed two hijacked planes into the 110-storey World Trade Center towers and another aircraft into the Pentagon killing hundreds and forcing evacuation of White House and other key government buildings.
The twin towers of the business center came crashing down after two passenger aircraft ripped into the two towers in Manhattan in a gap of 18 minutes.
American Airlines said its two hijacked planes were carrying a total of 156 passengers.
Over 50,000 work in the World Trade Center buildings.
Massive operations are on to rescue people from the debris.
Two United Airlines planes carrying a total of 110 passengers also crashed -- one outside Pittsburgh and the other in a location not immediately disclosed.
