India on Wednesday said that 90 of the 364 Indians, who were reported missing in the wake of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington last week, are safe.
Air-India, Indian Airlines and the railways have made arrangements to provide free transport to one relative of the deceased and have promised prompt reservation for a companion, according to information received by the ministry of external affairs.
The mortal remains of the deceased would be allowed into the country on authorisation by the Indian ambassador or consul general in the US.
Facilitation counters will operate at Delhi and Bombay international airports to ensure that the bodies and ashes are cleared promptly.
Authorities concerned have been instructed to issue passports without levying the tatkal charge to the close relatives of the injured, deceased or missing persons.
The Indian Consulate in New York is in constant touch with the Family Assistance Centre set up by the New York city authorities.
