US spy plane downed, Taliban claims

Behroz Khan in Peshawar

The Taleban government Saturday morning claimed that it has shot down a spy plane of the United States in Northern Afghanistan.

Mawlawi Najibullah, spokesman for the Afghan Council in Peshawar, told rediff.com that the incident occured at 0800 hrs PST. "The plane was found violating Afghan airspace at Samangan in Afghanistan," Najibullah said.

Officials both in Pakistan and in the United States have refused to confirm the incident.

The Taleban government meanwhile has deployed troops into battle stations along its border with Pakistan, and is believed to be putting finishing touches on its air defense systems as well.
