An agency report said United States Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Tuesday played down expectations of a major military offensive in response to the September 11 terrorist attacks.
The report quoted him, as saying there would be no 'D-Day' to mark the start of the US campaign.
"It is by its very nature something that cannot be dealt with by some sort of massive attack or invasion," he was quoted as saying.
He also said the earlier name given to the operation - Infinite Justice - was dropped after objections by Muslims, and has now been named Enduring Freedom.
He told a Pentagon press conference that there is a likelihood of more US lives being lost during the campaign, when it starts.
He added the campaign would be long, difficult and dangerous.
