Taleban denies capture of US soldiers

The Taleban militia on Saturday denied reports that it had captured any American troops on its soil.

"It is totally wrong. We deny this news," Taleban Defence Minister Mullah Obaidullah Akhund told a news agency.

The denial came soon after Qatar's Al-Jazeera reported that the Taleban had captured three American soldiers and their two Afghan guides.

The TV had reported that the five were in possession of weapons and maps of the locations of the Al-Qaeda, the terrorist organisation headed by Saudi renegade Osama bin Laden.

The Al-Jazeera TV, which was increasingly being been used by the Taleban as a conduit of information, was reportedly contacted by a source from the Al-Qaeda.

Quoting the source, the TV channel reported that the captives had modern weapons and maps and were believed to have been on a "reconnaissance mission to know the territory of Al-Qaeda".

The channel had also reported that the Al-Qaeda would shortly release pictures of the captured men.

The news came a day after senior White House officials confirmed that US and UK special forces have been operating inside Afghanistan on a seek-and-capture mission targeting Osama bin Laden and members of the Al-Qaeda.
