Suleman Din in New York
A Sri Lankan priest was witness to a horrific suicide attempt on Wednesday in New York's famous St Patrick's Cathedral.
Reverend Michael Rajendran met an unidentified man, who proceeded to tell him he wanted to give up on life. The man then took out a gun and shot himself in the chin.
Witnesses said the man was in his 20s and looked like a maintenance worker.
The man walked into the rectory at 2:20 pm asking to see a priest, and Rajendran took him into a small conference room, Chief of Detectives William Allee said.
The man also wrote a note that said he wanted to be buried at an Armenian cemetery.
After a few minutes, he pulled out a gun from his pants, and put it under his chin. Rajendran ran out of the room as the man fired.
A police officer told rediff.com that they still had no ID on the man, who is battling for his life at New York's St Vincent's Medical Center.
Allee told reporters that the man had seemed 'disconnected and disjointed' during the brief counselling session at the parish house, and had the 'strong smell of alcohol on his breath'.
