'American Talib' accused of conspiracy to kill US nationals

John Walker Lindh, the 'American Talib' who was captured in Afghanistan, has been charged with conspiracy to kill American nationals, Attorney General John Ashcroft said on Tuesday.

"The United States is charging Walker with...conspiracy to kill US nationals overseas, namely those engaged in the conflict in Afghanistan," Ashcroft said.

The 20-year-old is also charged with "providing material support and resources to designated foreign terrorist organisations, including the Al Qaeda, and engaging in prohibited transactions with the Taliban," he said.

Walker will not be tried in military tribunals set up by President George W Bush because, "according to the military order issued by the president, it's for dealing with non-citizens of the United States", the attorney general explained.

Walker was born of American parents and raised in his youth as a Roman Catholic. But he converted to Islam, joined a madrassa in Pakistan to learn Quran and later became a jihadi. Later, he went to Afghanistan and joined the Taliban.
