The United Nations Security Council has lifted sanctions against Afghanistan, but made it obligatory for all states to impose arms and travel embargoes on, and freeze assets of, Osama bin Laden's Al Qaeda network, remnants of the Taliban and groups associated with them wherever they may be.
The resolution -- introduced by France to modify sanctions following the defeat of the Taliban and the possibility of Taliban and Al Qaeda fighters fleeing other countries -- was unanimously adopted on Wednesday.
The resolution reintroduces sanctions for the Al Qaeda and Taliban that were due to expire on Saturday.
Diplomats said the initial focus would be on neighbouring countries, where some of their fighters may have escaped.
The resolution was strongly supported by the United States, which is of the opinion that it would be help in the war against the Al Qaeda and Taliban.
The sanctions committee, on which all fifteen Council members are represented and which had been overseeing the implementation of sanctions against the Taliban, will now monitor embargoes against the Al Qaeda and the Taliban and constantly update the list of organisations associated with them.
The member states are obliged to take action against these organisations, including freezing of their assets.
