TV Parasuram in Washington
Washington DC Mayor Anthony Williams was awarded the Counterpart Humanitarian Award for Civic Leadership for his role in helping Gujarat earthquake victims last year.
The mayor was honoured on Saturday night for his efforts in bringing the citizens of Washington DC together to reach out to the survivors of the devastating quake.
Indian Ambassador to the United States, Lalit Mansingh presented the award -- a gouache by acclaimed artist Susan Hostetler -- before an audience of leading Indian business professionals, city and national political leaders on India's Republic Day.
Mansingh thanked the mayor on behalf of millions of Indians for his determined response to one of the worst natural disasters in Indian history, which killed thousands of people and left many homeless.
Accepting the award, Mayor Williams characterised his support as "a small token of our recognition of a great loss". "What one of us suffer, all of us suffer," he said.
The capital's Chief Financial Officer, Dr Natwar M Gandhi, was also recognised at the event for his persistence in mobilising relief for the survivors.
