The Pakistan government has frozen the assets of a retired nuclear scientist for his links with the Taliban and Al Qaeda.
The decision to freeze the assets of Sultan Bashir-ud-Din Mehmood was taken on the recommendations of the UN Security Council, which on January 24 issued an updated list of individuals and entities associated with the Taliban or Al Qaeda, a leading Pakistani daily, the Dawn, reported on Thursday.
The action became mandatory for Pakistan after the UN Security Council resolutions, the daily quoted foreign office spokesman Aziz Ahmad Khan as saying.
Earlier, the assets and funds of another alleged pro-Taliban nuclear scientist, Abdul Majeed, were also frozen.
Investigations had revealed that Mehmood, who was arrested in October 2001, following the September 11 attacks in the United States, had been "conditionally" released by the government, it said, adding that he had been asked to remain available on an hour's notice.
During captivity, the scientist was interrogated by a joint team of Pakistani and US officials. The US team comprised officials of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Central Investigation Agency and the country's scientists, the report said.
